Septorhinoplasty (Cosmetic Nasal Surgery)
A septorhinoplasty, also known as cosmetic nasal surgery, is a combination of a rhinoplasty and a septoplasty. Dr. Bressler performs this procedure to fix any of the following issues: deviated septum, correct nasal breathing, and enhance the overall appearance of the nose.
Indications for Septorhinoplasty
The best candidates for cosmetic nasal surgery are those who experience day-to-day problems due to their deviated septum. These types of patients are more likely to experience trouble breathing, chronic sinus problems, and even difficulty sleeping, or a combination of any of those issues. Even more so, these individuals will experience cosmetic concerns with their noses, such as crookedness or an unwanted bump.
Procedure Details
When the patient and Dr. Bressler decide that septorhinoplasty is the ideal treatment for the former, then they should expect to be put under general anesthesia for the entire surgery.
Dr. Bressler will start the surgery by making a small incision on the inside of the patient’s nose. Through this incision, he’ll easily access the septum’s cartilage and bone. These elements are reshaped and removed, if necessary, to help improve breathing for the patient.
After correcting the deviated septum, he will proceed to handle the cosmetic restructuring portion of the surgery. This can include reshaping the tip of the nose, shaving bone to remove any hump in the nose, and overall improving the aesthetic appearance of the nose.
Benefits and Results
Undergoing a septorhinoplasty can provide many great benefits for patients. Here are some of the benefits:
- Easier breathing from day to day
- Ability to breathe better during exercise
- Experience an enhanced sense of smell, sense of taste, and even better sleep quality
- Feel better about their overall appearance and have enhanced self-confidence
Recovery and Aftercare
The overall results of a septorhinoplasty are going to be highly dependent on the aftercare that the patient’s treatment site receives. Dr. Bressler will give patients a list of aftercare instructions. It’s necessary that they avoid any sort of strenuous activity for at least three weeks following their surgery. It’s best to sleep with your head elevated and avoid blowing your nose, as this could lead to unwanted bleeding and swelling.
Most patients report seeing results in their breathing between three and six months post-surgery. Results in their overall appearance can typically be seen within a few weeks after the surgery once the swelling goes down. The results of a septorhinoplasty are considered permanent.
Cost and Financing
The overall cost of your septorhinoplasty is going to vary depending on a number of factors, like the number of alterations needed.
The parts of the procedure that are deemed to be medically necessary to enhance breathing should be covered by any typical insurance policy. However, cosmetic alterations to enhance the appearance of the nose may not be covered by the insurance since they aren’t deemed medically necessary.
It’s best to check with the insurance company to get a better idea of how much of the procedure they will cover.
