Somnoplasty – Snoring Breathing Problems – Houston

Published on February 21, 2014

SomnoplastySnoring is much more than an annoying habit for some people. When snoring is severe, it can interfere with sleep patterns for you, partners or family members. In extreme cases, sometimes surgery is recommended to fix snoring. Snoring surgery is called a somnoplasty.

During sleep, a soft structure in the throat called the pharynx vibrates against the soft palate, which causes the sound of snoring. When you are awake, the muscles are tightened, which prevents the vibrations from occurring.

A somnoplasty reduces snoring by using heat energy to create localized burn areas in the soft-tissue lining of the throat. The burn areas shrink the tissue volume and open the airways up to reduce the vibrations. Consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Fred Bressler if you would like to know more about the somnoplasty.
