The Current Buzz

At The Bressler Center, we like to stay abreast of recent news articles regarding cosmetic facial procedures and surgery throughout the country. These provide us with insight to new and exciting treatments, technology, and the current buzz surrounding our field.

Dr. Funk’s seminars on Botox® and fillers throughout the fall seemed to generate much excitement and awareness. Therefore, we have chosen some pertinent articles from throughout the country regarding these procedures.

As facial plastic surgeons who understand the facial anatomy and facial aesthetics, we pride ourselves on administering these treatments ourselves allowing us to fully understand our patients’ wishes and establish rapport. When considering any future cosmetic surgery, this allows for a comfortable, non-stressful, and pleasant consultation with a familiar surgeon.

About Fillers
Here are a few key points to remember when considering these treatments:

1) Botox® is a medication injected directly into the muscle to treat dynamic wrinkles, or wrinkles caused by facial movements.
2) Botox® is measured in units, not in milliliters or syringes. The concentration of the Botox® depends on how much saline was placed into the Botox® vial. Always ask how many units you received during your injection.
3) Ask when your Botox® was reconstituted (see Injectables and Fillers for further information).
4) Botox® begins to work at 2-3 days and has its maximal effect at about 2 weeks.
5) Fillers are implants or devices injected into the skin (dermis) to treat passive wrinkles or wrinkles/folds seen at rest. They are also used for volume correction when injected deeper.
6) Do not massage after filler injection unless instructed otherwise.
7) Avoid the use of Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Ginko Biloba, St. John’s Wort, Vitamin E, Garlic, or Ginger for 1 week prior to your treatment.

New Aquecool™ Rapid Recovery System and Masks
We are excited to introduce Aquecool™, a new tool for recovery after facial rejuvenation surgery. Aquecool™ masks significantly reduce postoperative pain and allow for substantially decreased bruising and swelling. The mask attaches to a cooling device to provide 24 hours of continuous cooling, compression, and soothing for those first few postoperative days. Patients will no longer need to use messy, wet, cool compresses. And, Aquecool will take a burden off the family member or friend assisting at home with postoperative care and allow for continuous therapy. The Aquecool™ system is rented by the patient for seven days and the mask is purchased. This mask can be kept for future use after laser resurfacing or filler treatment. Patients at The Bressler Center have been enthusiastic about Aquecool, and the surgeons and staff believe the masks can make a considerable difference in the healing process.

Rhinoplasty in Facial Plastic Surgery Clinics of North America
FPSC Web Site
The art of rhinoplasty (nose surgery) and revision rhinoplasty is constantly changing. Dr. Etai Funk co-authored an article entitled "Nasal Tip Dynamics" in the February 2009 issue of Facial Plastic Surgery Clinics of North America. Here is an excerpt:

"In rhinoplasty, the nasal tip remains the most challenging anatomic region to diagnose and treat. This article presents a new concept, the M-arch model, to better understand the functional and aesthetic anatomy of the tip. This M-arch can be lengthened or shortened, or left as is, to establish the basis of ideal nasal length, projection, and rotation. Additional suture, incisional, excisional, and grafting maneuvers can be performed in a graduated fashion to further refine the M-arch, including the lobule and soft tissue of the nasal base. A full description of the M-arch model and its application is presented, and representative results are illustrated."
